For all my Canadian friends out there. (Well, ok, for Rog...)

I got to see Sidney Crosby play for the first time last night and HOLY SHIT. I love hockey. Love, Love, Love it. There is no doubt in my mind that it is now my favorite sport and takes precedence over college basketball. (Sorry, greeneyes, football is great fun, but it was always only a close third in my book...) I just needed a barely-18 kid to show me that. This is what hockey has been waiting for...this is the Next Big Thing. I mean, I know that other people have said it, but I never quite believed them until I watched the Philly/Pitt game last night. He got high sticked in the face, chipped a couple of teeth, went to the locker room to get stitches in his mouth, and then came back out and scored the OT game-winner. Just like that. A day at the office. He so obviously has a love for the game that it makes him exciting to watch. He's not there to be the Next Big Thing, he's there to play and have fun. What a NOVEL idea in pro sports. Here's a kid (my John Madden digression) that can get blocked, fall over two defenders, land on his ass, and make a shot on goal while trying to get back up. WHAT?! Who does that? I love him. I want him on my team. I might become a Penguins fan. Sorry, Ovechkin, it sucks that there was no hockey last year, because you would have been Rookie of the Year. Too late.

I havent seen Crosby yet, but I have seen Ovechkin--and he is terrific---if Crosby is half as good as Ovechkin then he is quite a player.......now, how about if I send you a maple leaf to sew on your jacket---honorary Canadian and all that! And do you know the words to O'Canada yet?

For some reason, when I read this post (and the associated comments), I keep reading Ovechkin as "Overchicken." So, now I have a vision of some Nietzsche-esque chicken in my head. Maybe a chicken with a cape and a big O on his breast. Really, it's not a pretty sight.

Maybe I should start watching hockey just to see what all the fuss is about!

Ovechkin is leading Crosby in points right now, this is true, but I think over the test of the season Crosby will do more for his team. (Sorry, Rog, but you just ain't got a team this season...) and I don't want no friggin Maple Leaf. Toronto or otherwise. In fact, I've been mad at Toronto ever since they let Cujo slip out of their hands. It serves them right. He has the highest save % and the lowest GAA he's ever had this year at Phoenix. Take that, bastards! You don't have to be Canadienne to love hockey!

And, WH, he doesn't look like a chicken...but he has a big Russian head. Sorry, that was mean. But I doubt he reads my blog.

you are right that the Caps dont have much this season. But I have to say I am impressed with the cadre of youngsters they have. If they play there cards right, and they get the right coaching (and I think Glen Hanlon has the right temperment for it) they could be a team to contend with down the road. Many of their losses this year have been the result of too many rookie mistakes and not enough experience. This was Leonsis' intent though. He recognizes that they probably will not do well this year, but after such a bad experience with Jagr and company, he decided to start fresh. So from this perspective, I am impressed --so far.

I agree that getting rid of Jagr was the right move. I watch him play now and even as a player near the top of the board in points, he just doesn't have it like he used to.

Good luck anyway, with next season that is. ;)
